What is to follow is a more detailed description of the 3 program sections. Upon passing, you’ll earn the prestigious title SA-C (Surgical Assistant – Certified). Once you graduate from the ACE Surgical Assistant Program, you are eligible to sit for the national certifying exam for Surgical Assistants administered by the American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA). The ultimate mission of the program is to help you prepare for a surgical career where you can first assist in surgery using surgeon-level skills and get paid at surgeon-level for your services. The program is offered in 3 sections: 1) Distance Learning at your home 2) Hands-On Training at convenient locations – it could even be at your hospital and 3) Clinical Experience at your hospital, with your surgeons. The line for who handles what between surgical technologists and SFAs can blur depending on the structure of the OR team or the procedure being performed, but SFAs typically have an expanded range of duties during a procedure.This is the only fully self-paced Surgical Assistant Program designed to help very busy healthcare professionals advance their surgical careers, without having to quit their jobs to go back to college. Like surgical technologists, surgical first assistants play a complementary role to the lead surgeon. What does a surgical first assistant (SFA) do?
